Senior Day Ceremony - Pembroke High School Girls Field Hockey

It's Senior Day for the 2012 Pembroke Titans Girls Field Hockey Team!  Pembroke Community Media Center was there to capture the event.  The ceremony was held on the field behind Pembroke High School on October 23rd, honoring the Seniors before playing their season's last home game.

Soumya Karra, Nikki Hoefer, Kim Leonard, Kristin Sherman, Erin Haley, Erin Johnson, Melissa Hatch, Sarah Scully, and Maura O'Brien each pass under a canopy of raised hockey sticks before stopping to be photographed.   A short speech was read by a teammate saying how much the senior is liked and will be missed.

Coach Jen Halloran who played JV then captained varsity field hockey during her four years at Pembroke High School, says “Good Luck. Have Fun. Enjoy whatever you do in life.  I wish you all success.”

“It's a very emotional day for the girls,” the announcer ads, “so let's recognize each girl and show them how much we love them.”

Singing “The Star Spangled Banner” is the duo of Colleen Burns and Kayla Kenney, proudly wearing their “Everybody Loves Romeo” cast t-shirts.  These busy girls took time away from play rehearsal to sing at the event.

At the end of the video are lovely still shots of the girls put to music.  CLICK HERE to see the video

GIRLS' GYMNASTICS IS BACK!

Pembroke Community Media Center, Inc. has been getting requests to show high school gymnastics meets, and we are happy to oblige.

Gymnastics is a winter sport that starts after Thanksgiving when football ends.  Many Pembroke Titans cheerleaders do double duty as gymnasts, so that's why the two sports have separate seasons.

In January the combined Titans/Silver Lake team competed on their USA Gymnastics home turf against Rockland/Hanover.

CLICK HERE to see 40 minutes of stick-it, tumbling fun.  Try not to get dizzy as our finest high school gymnasts swing around bars, leap over vaults, and tuck flip in the air.

Stay tuned to Pembroke Community Media Center's website and blog for continuing coverage of this year's gymnastics competitions.  Don't worry.  We have been listening to viewer requests, and plan to film all the home games, and some of the away meets too.

PEMBROKE COMMUNITY MEDIA CENTER FILMS “EVERYBODY LOVES ROMEO”

What do you get when you combine a Shakespearean troupe with a hometown media center? You guessed it. A great Romeo and Juliet video!

Pembroke Community Media Center student and parent volunteers filmed the Thespian Group 7127 premier presentation of "Everybody Loves Romeo" at Pembroke High School Friday night, October 26th.

Copies were ready for sale at the door the next night.

When asked how Pembroke Community Media Center was able to get "Everybody Loves Romeo" DVDs done so quickly, representative Margaret Jones said "We had high school students in the play and others who had friends in the show who wanted to help out to just get it done."

Jones added, "It seemed like a good idea to have the actual finished DVDs for sale, rather than just order forms like in previous years.  The volunteers were motivated and had a lot of fun."

The high school students who helped earned community service credit hours required for graduation.

PAPA Secretary Michelle Fay was excited about having discs to sell so soon.  “Can't wait to get my copy!” said Fay.

“We want to make sure The Performing Arts Parents' Association (PAPA) gets money,” Jones explained.  “Most people buying DVDs have children in the shows we film, and it's really important for them to know that what they pay for a DVD is helping PAPA's fund raising efforts.”

Twenty five percent of proceeds goes directly to PAPA for senior scholarships, private lessons, music camps, instrument purchases, provide transportation, and a lot more.

Assisted Suicide.. Discussion at the Pembroke Council on Aging

THE POPULAR ELDER SAVVY SHOW IS BACK WITH HOST MARY WILLIS

Wonder no longer what happened to Mary Willis's Elder Savvy show. It's being produced and shown by Pembroke Community Media Center right here in Pembroke.  Today's guest is Attorney Patricia D. Stewart who presents timely information on a pending Massachusetts bill which would legalize and re-categorize a large dose of Seconal (Secobarbital sodium) as a medication, rather than as a poison.

Attorney Stewart gives a clear, informative, and detailed presentation of the issues and laws surrounding this topic; and exposes the fact that there is no "assisting" involved in taking large doses of poison at home. "Medical science today has the ability to prevent anyone from suffering uncontrolled pain.  Hospice and palliative care people tell me that if a patient is in that kind of pain they should be getting another doctor, because there's no excuse or reason for it today," Attorney Stewart explains.

You can count on Mary Willis to ask the questions you'd like answered, and to point out that insurance companies could legally opt to pay for cheaper death-resulting pills rather than more expensive curative medications. Insurance companies in Oregon already are doing just that.  "It sounds like a horrible way to go," says Ms. Willis, referring to the 3 hours of convulsions and vomiting that typically accompany a Seconal overdose.  "Well it's certainly not a painless death with dignity," replies Attorney Stewart.

This Elder Savvy episode has an audience, members of which ask questions too.  You'll want to watch this show.  Click here to see the pills and educate yourself on matters which could affect you and those you love.

Cute Furry Pets are Blessed at the First Church in Pembroke

Pets are blessed at the 300-year-old First Church in Pembroke, Massachusetts by Pastor Rick Giragosian who says "may you and the people who love you enjoy life together, and may you always find joy in the God who created you,  Amen."

The ceremonies start on Sunday, October 21st in the church parking lot with readings and a prayer from the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "How much richer our lives are because of these furry friends," a young man says.  "We thank you for giving us pets which give us joy," says a young woman.

Meet Zaxu the cat, Chance the dog, and even Salt who is a rodent small enough to fit in his boy's hand. Pembroke Community Media Center volunteers filmed the event so you can see each pet get individually blessed.  As people and animals prepare to leave, Pastor Rick distributes brightly wrapped dog and cat treats made the week before by the congregation's children.

For those who were missing Pastor Joe's  wisdom and humor,  Pembroke Community Media Center, Inc. is pleased to announce that the wait is over.   "Building God's Community" is the theme of August 26th's service which starts with a lively rendition of "Building Up the Temple" sung from the pulpit. Enjoy this inspiring sermon from the comfort of your home as you "persevere and believe."  Click here for, in Pastor Joe Quaresimo's words, "Home Chapel. And may you be blessed.".

And Now, A Word From Commissioner Anthony T. O'Brien

Join Massachusetts Plymouth County Commissioner Anthony T. O'Brien for an interesting and informative Public Service Announcement (PSA) recorded by Pembroke Community Media Center in Pembroke.  O'Brien, a retired Lieutenant Commander of the US Navy Seals and 21-year military veteran, tells us that a "shire" is a county, and a "shiretown" is county seat. And did you know there are 3 registries of deeds in Plymouth County?  Who knew a Public Service announcement could be simultaneously this educational and entertaining?

Plymouth County Commissioner, Anthony T. O'Brien

Plymouth County encompasses 27 towns and is one of the largest in Massachusetts.  Abington, Bridgewater, Brockton, Carver, Duxbury, East Bridgewater, Halifax, Hanover, Hanson, Hingham, Hull, Kingston, Lakeville, Marion, Marshfield, Mattapoisett, Middleboro, Norwell, Pembroke, Plymouth, Plympton, Rochester, Rockland, Scituate, Wareham, West Bridgewater & Whitman are included with over 1000 square miles and half a million residents.

We are grateful to Commissioner O'Brien for making this government PSA for us, and you will be too.

Tastes of 1712 ~ A Pembroke 300th Anniversary Event

Join us in the hall of The First Church in Pembroke for a 300th Anniversary culinary celebration of the church's official 1712 formation.

The menu was authenticated by Kathleen Wall, the Colonial Foodways Culinarian of Plimouth Plantation, and prepared by congregational members with guidance from 18th century cookbook recipes.  Pembroke Community Media Center’s newest volunteer Janet Callahan edited and produced the festivities so you can relive the event as if you were there, or participate now through the magic of video.

The menu included roasted turkey, roasted pork, baked beans, butternut squash, a vegetable medley of carrots-parsnips-turnips, corn bread, cranberry torte, pear torte, Indian pudding with sweet cream, bread and "biscuit."

Did you know that "New England Bread" was and still is made of 1/3rd rye, 1/3rd wheat, and 1/3rd cornmeal? It's called "Thirded Bread."

A plain cookie made famous by President John Quincy Adams whose wife, First Lady, Louisa Catherine Adams brought the recipe to the white House, is named "Shrewsbury Biscuit," after Shrewsbury, County of Shopshire.

When directions called for flour, the spelling was "flower."  Martha Washington's Book of Cookery has pastry instructions calling for "flower," butter, and water to be "rouled" out.

These and other old recipes were used in preparation of the Tastes of 1712 dinner, making this historic 300th celebration both a traditional meal and an educational feast.

You also hear Pastor Giragosian read from a 1962 issue of Silver Lake News that looked ahead to the 300th Anniversary in 2012, helping Pembrokians imagine what Pembroke would be like in 50 years.

Pembroke High School Jr. Varsity Volleyball is Back!

The Pembroke Titans Girls' JV Volleyball team met the North Quincy Red Raiders in a best of 3 game set on Friday, October 19th, and Pembroke Community Media Center volunteers were there to film the action.

Pembroke’s 14-girl JV Titans team doesn't disappoint. They have speed and fortitude.

In the first set against the Junior Varsity team from North Quincy, the competiveness between the girls keeps the scores close through the beginning and middle of the game.  For Pembroke, Rachel Fletcher, Erin Wyngren and Maddy Mazola posted quite a few digs against North Quincy with Jenny Murphy and Venessa Depetro assisting, but North Quincy out hit Pembroke in the last few minutes of the game with a 4 point spread.

In the second game North Quincy came out strong, leading from end to end, winning with a 10 point lead making for a 2 game set.

STUDENTS EARN COMMUNITY SERVICE CREDIT HOURS DURING PAUL CRIMI'S PAINTING SHOW

While Famed Fine Artist Paul Crimi was creating a painting in one hour, the high school students working crew were earning community service credit hours towards graduation.  "These guys are great," Mr. Crimi says about his helpers. "Absolutely Great."

Paul begins by showing and telling us about a finished painting called "Flowers on the Sidewalk"  which "has nice depth to it.....and really soft flower colors."  The brickwork is spectacular.

"The Beach House" painting was made from a photograph taken in Sprucehead, Maine. A field of flowers was added.

An indoor scene of a "really funky house with real quiet rooms," the Olson House, is the subject of the next finished painting.

For the body of this tutorial, Paul sketches a fall landscape from a photograph of the North River on the Hanover/Hanson line by Myette's store. Starting on a medium-size black canvass "helps the colors."  First comes the blue sky, then the black lines.  "I feel like the guy with the magic brush," Paul says.
