Pembroke Community Media Center has a Half-Hour Church Service for You

"Even more important than monetary contributions, is the time and caring that we give to one another," announces a parishioner during "The Deacon Moment."

This half-hour service is chock full of such thoughtful moments. Beginning with shoes and boots donated to comfort the feet of Boston's needy, Pastor Giragosian assisting a young girl lighting the candle on the altar, and a mother cradling her restless child; not a moment passes that we don't view some example of caring within the congregation itself.

It's the annual event, "Barefoot Sunday," at the First Church in Pembroke, Massachusetts.  Uncharacteristically gracing the alter is a substantial and colorful pile of new footwear destined to shod the feet of the city's less fortunate.
The sermon is an entertaining litany of the funny things people do while waiting for an elevator car to arrive or a traffic light to change.  Pastor Giragosian uses those comical situations to ask what people do and can do while waiting for God.  The answer isn't much of a surprise, so I'll just tell you.  It's “look busy and be busy” caring and helping others.

WHAT? YOU MISSED CHURCH TODAY?

Never fear. The First Congregational Church service is here.

Filmed Sunday, November 18th, this presentation shows parishioners welcomed to the fold in a "Rite of New Member Reception" ceremony starting 10 minutes into the video. Promises, handshakes, and bouquets of red roses were shared.

"Today we rejoice in your pilgrimage of faith," Pastor Giragosian says, "which has brought you to this time and to this place. So we do give thanks for community."

The entire congregation offers in unison, "We promise you our friendship and prayers."

Now the new members have lots of new friends.

One woman expressed afterwards that the roses were so beautiful; she planned to keep them a long time as dried flowers.

FIRST CHURCH IN PEMBROKE SUNDAY SERVICE, Nov. 4, 2012

This service is all about giving, sharing, and participating in miracles.

Remember the story about five loaves of bread and two fishes feeding a crowd?  There were about five thousand men AND the women and children with them.  Are we up to 15 or 20 thousand people?  Probably.

Pastor Rick Giragosian patiently explains that when people share what's in their pockets—some figs, raisins, bread---everyone has enough.  After all, what are the odds that a group of hikers would carry no provisions?  The miracle's mechanism is solved, and we are urged to facilitate additional, modern-day miracles.  Pastor Rick says, “Be the first on your block to start a miracle.”

A cute skit about giving to the church is acted out by parishioners Marsha and Jane.  We laugh at how inappropriate it would be to not tip a waitress, then realize that it is just as bad to withhold church offerings.

Hear “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee,” “The Bread That Gives Life”, “For Every Thing There Is a Season,” and other inspirational songs.

There's even a portion of the service during which Pastor Giragosian reads a letter written by parishioner Laura while she stands next to him.  “It's a ventriloquist act,” he jokes.

If you were at this service, and especially if you weren't, CLICK HERE to be a part of this twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost celebration.

NO CRINKLING CANDY WRAPPERS AT THIS SUNDAY SERVICE

Pembroke First Church - October 28, 2012 ~

Warning: If you like the irritating sound of candy wrappers crunching in your ear, this video is not for you!

'Ever wish you could participate in a full church service in half the time? This condensed upbeat and reverent version of Sunday Service at The First Church in Pembroke is up your alley.

We begin with Choir members singing while walking up the aisle to their seats. Then it's Pastor Richard Giragosian's turn to wish us a “Good morning.  Please join in the Call to Worship.”

As Pastor Rick speaks, you can read his positive words written across the screen. “God accepts us, and fills us with the Holy Spirit.”

During children's participation time, a young boy explains that Halloween is a time to “go to a house and say trick-or-treat, then they give you candy.”  Another boy says that “some people might just give you a little toy matchbox car.”

Next is a brief and moving solo by Jay Althouse. “More like you Lord....your spirit dwells in me.”

Today's sermon is about saints.

We close with two cute-as-pie young children extinguishing the alter candles.
