"Even
more important than monetary contributions, is the time and caring that we give
to one another," announces a parishioner during "The Deacon
Moment."
This
half-hour service is chock full of such thoughtful moments. Beginning with
shoes and boots donated to comfort the feet of Boston's needy, Pastor
Giragosian assisting a young girl lighting the candle on the altar, and a
mother cradling her restless child; not a moment passes that we don't view some
example of caring within the congregation itself.
It's
the annual event, "Barefoot Sunday," at the First Church in Pembroke,
Massachusetts. Uncharacteristically
gracing the alter is a substantial and colorful pile of new footwear destined
to shod the feet of the city's less fortunate.
The
sermon is an entertaining litany of the funny things people do while waiting
for an elevator car to arrive or a traffic light to change. Pastor Giragosian uses those comical
situations to ask what people do and can do while waiting for God. The answer isn't much of a surprise, so I'll
just tell you. It's “look busy and be
busy” caring and helping others.
