Pembroke's Year-Long 300th Birthday Party Ended Saturday Night

The Pembroke 300th Committee held a congratulatory closing event December 15th at the Pembroke, Massachusetts County club thanking themselves and others for contributing to the planning and execution of events commemorating the 300th anniversary of the Town's incorporation in 1712.  Pembroke Community Media Center had multiple camera persons present to assure complete coverage.

Senate President Therese Murray presented the Committee with an award signed by herself twice, once in the capacity of senator representing Pembroke, and once as Senate President.  She thanked all for  the resultant fun their hard work provided.

Montillios Bakery provided a wonderfully large, tasty, and artistic cake that night, just as they did a year ago for the opening event at the same location.

Library Director and photographer Deborah Wall gifted one of her own spectacular works, identical to that hanging in her office, to the 300th committee chairman who had been admiring and coveting it over the course of this 2012 year.

Kyle Harney presented what he called a “One Of,” standing for a “one-of-a kind,” uniquely special encapsulation book filled with 300th Anniversary information, photos, etc. that he meticulously compiled over the past 12 months and longer.

Rick Madden is featured for his perseverance and dedication in his quest to plant trees as replacements for those lost in town over the past 300 years.  Taller trees cut down and used as ship masts have yet to grow to those previous heights, and Rick is out to right that wrong.

Many more awards were given and received.

Ending the evening's riot of accolades are 17 slides transferred from laptop to projection screen listing people and businesses who gave money to the 300th Committee, with Committee Chairman Bill Boulter's profile on the left.

Pembroke Community Media Center's Deanna Hatch Covers All PHS Girls' Varsity Hockey Games

WHP is the name of the Titans' Whitman-Hanson-Pembroke Girls Hockey team that calls the 15-year-old Bridgewater Ice Arena(BIA) at 20 Bedford Park it's home rink.   Prior to the opening game on December 8th, WHP played and Deanna filmed 2012-2013 season scrimmage meets against Marshfield, Franklin, and Dedham at the Hobomock, Marlboro, and Hyde Park rinks respectively.

Deanna's daughter, Pembroke High School senior Mel Hatch, is on the team.
CLICK HERE for December 5th WHP vs Dedham at the Bajko Memorial Rink on Turtle Pond Parkway, Hyde Park, MA.

The season's December 8th opener against Hanover/Cohasset started with a goal by Ali Webster who was assisted by Jackie Sullivan and Jane Morrisette.  WHP's Giana DeAcetis scored next, assisted by both Jane Morrisette and Ali Webster.

There was serious action, as evidenced by seven penalties being called: four for WHP and 3 for Hanover-Cohasset.

More points were scored, but we don't want to ruin things for you if you don't yet know which team won.  CONTACT US for viewing instructions/information for this one hour and 8 minute, privately-linked presentation.
We'll keep you posted as Pembroke Community Center volunteers edit more of Deanna's WHP Varsity hockey footage.

I AM THANKFUL FOR LOVE, A WARM HOUSE, & COLORED MASHED POTATOES

For what are you thankful?  For good things?  For the absence of bad?

The First Church in Pembroke, Massachusetts held a Thanksgiving Eve service at which members expounded upon their personal thoughts of gratitude, while others played and sung lovely music.

"For the home where I live, thank you for meadows and beautiful flowers. Thank you for rainbows and soft April showers," a young girl reads from a book as her mother approvingly looks on.  So sweet.

Next there is a solo by Jim Tucker, the choir's only male member.  "Thank You Lord for Loving Us All," he sings, "for the gifts both great and small."

Three women each speak briefly about their personal reasons and items for which they feel grateful.

Did you know that some families add color their holiday dinner by dying the mashed potatoes?  It's true, and that's something for which thanks can be given.

A constant thread throughout this video is the lovely flute and guitar duet by Julie and Greg. The crisp and airy song is presented  in three sections: at the beginning, middle, and end.

You will enjoy this quick, heartfelt, and to-the-point affirmation of faith in God's gifts.  It's 17 1/2 minutes of pure joy.  CLICK HERE to see the video

PEMBROKE GIRLS DANCE IN NUTCRACKER BALLET

We are so proud of Pembroke's own 16-yr-old Candace Mitchell of The Children's Dance Ensemble of Hanover.  She auditioned and landed a role as the Arabian Dance soloist in The Nutcracker Ballet being presented at 2pm both on Saturday,  December 15th, and Sunday the 16th at Weymouth High School, One Wildcat Way, Weymouth.

The older Killham dancer, 11-year Emma,  looks simply adorable in her Party Boy costume of short jacket and knickers in Act One. We in Pembroke are so proud of you Emma.

So charge up your holiday spirit, mark your calendars, and bring $15/adult and $10/child to this season's handiest and best local performance of The Nutcracker Ballet.  You can call 781-829-0390 for tickets or go to www.danceworkshopofhanover.com.

JOHN HENRY O'KEEFE'S VIDEO-MAKING DEBUT

Pembroke student John Henry O'Keefe filmed the Saturday, November 10th, Scouting for Food event at the Community Center.  As food was dropped off and sorted by cub scouts, boy scouts, girl scouts and others; he was there capturing the action with a big, professional camera set on a tall tripod.

John's ability to zoom in and out animated this video even more.

Picking up a camera and using it are the first steps towards becoming proficient, and it's no surprise that John Henry seems to have a natural talent.  His uncle, Kevin O'Keefe, was instrumental in starting Pembroke's Public Cable Access station over 25 years ago with Campbell Cable.

In the video, John conducts two interviews, shows the food that was donated during this Pack 105 annual event, and lets us watch some of the goods sorting on the Community Center's big tables normally used for Saturday night bingo.

He earned community service hours towards the forty required for graduation from Pembroke High School by filming, editing, and creating this video for all to watch and enjoy.

300th Anniversary Concert

November 7, 2012 - Pembroke, MA ~ Did you miss last Saturday's 300th Anniversary Concert at Pembroke High School?  Or were you there and need an encore?

Well, we have it all, from composer Richard Tuttle's “Pembroke Alma Mater” to composer Peter Glass's “Mattakeesett,” and everything in between.

Classical guitarist Mark Leighton  got a standing ovation after playing Prelude # 1 by Hector Villa-Lobos.

Soloist Sarah Alfano had the entire crowd laughing at her silly facial expressions and postural antics accompanying the singing of “Taylor, the Latte Boy.”

Peter Glass's unique and moving masterpiece “Mattakeesett,” composed specifically for this Town event, was played and sung in its entirety for the first time before a live audience of Pembroke residents.  The lyrics were written as a combined effort by Peter Glass, Kelsey Hackett, Jameson Kidder, Karen McConarty, Michaela Ng, Kendra Smith, Michael Stockdale, Mathew Suckow, and Matthew Winn.

The concert was presented by Pembroke's High School Music Department. Singers and musicians from the school and community joined forces for this historic evening commemorating the 300th anniversary of Pembroke's incorporation.

SHE'S HOW OLD?????

Ever wonder what happens when someone keeps having birthday parties year after year?  You guessed it.  A lot of candles are blown out and a ton of cake is eaten.

"Louise Keeps Having Birthday Parties" is an eight-minute walk down memory lane showcasing 2002 photos from Louise Tanderes's 80th birthday party at The Council on Aging.  The pictures were taken by Florence Angley's granddaughter, Jamie. The two of them arranged the entire surprise celebration.

To make sure the birthday girl didn't suspect a party was coming, Florence kept her friend Louise occupied the entire day before, and did no preparing for the event.  Florence was 87 at the time.

Mary Willis, Director of The Council on Aging, provided the party venue 10 years ago.

This year's celebration will be at the Pembroke Library on Sunday December 2nd from 1pm to 4. Louise wants people to stop in for a visit, and says "Oh, don't bring any presents.  Just bring yourself."

Louise will be turning 90.  CLICK HERE to watch

NO CRINKLING CANDY WRAPPERS AT THIS SUNDAY SERVICE

Pembroke First Church - October 28, 2012 ~

Warning: If you like the irritating sound of candy wrappers crunching in your ear, this video is not for you!

'Ever wish you could participate in a full church service in half the time? This condensed upbeat and reverent version of Sunday Service at The First Church in Pembroke is up your alley.

We begin with Choir members singing while walking up the aisle to their seats. Then it's Pastor Richard Giragosian's turn to wish us a “Good morning.  Please join in the Call to Worship.”

As Pastor Rick speaks, you can read his positive words written across the screen. “God accepts us, and fills us with the Holy Spirit.”

During children's participation time, a young boy explains that Halloween is a time to “go to a house and say trick-or-treat, then they give you candy.”  Another boy says that “some people might just give you a little toy matchbox car.”

Next is a brief and moving solo by Jay Althouse. “More like you Lord....your spirit dwells in me.”

Today's sermon is about saints.

We close with two cute-as-pie young children extinguishing the alter candles.

CLICK HERE to see this video filmed and edited by two of Pembroke Community Media Center's newest volunteers, Heather Lapham and Kim O'Keefe, both of whom exclaimed “We had soooooo much fun!”

Heather had the following to say about her new volunteer experience:  “It is AWESOME!!!  I had so much fun with you ladies yesterday editing and I can't wait to do it all again!
I have sent this link to family members now! Yeah!!!! Fun!!! :)

Thank you for including us! I had a great time and I'm pretty sure that Kim did, too!
