The Robert Kopper Show

Kopper grew up in Washington, DC as the youngest of four children in a family that regularly discussed politics at the table. In 1985 he moved to Pembroke, Massachusetts where he now lives with his wife and children.  "People love to express their opinions," Kopper says, "and I am here to give them that opportunity. To give them a voice."

"I grew up listening to WBZ talk shows on my crystal radio," Kopper continued.  "There was Jerry Williams and Gene Burns on RKO.

"My brother had an alternative rock show during the 60s and 70s on WBCN 104.1 in the morning."

When asked  why he prefers the talk show genre, Kopper answered, "I like it because there's a lot to talk about, and I know that people are more interested in politics than they realize.  It affects their lives more than entertainment or sports ever could or will."

Published April 25, 2013 - Part I The Robert Kopper Show with Fighter Pilot Robert Roy III Torpedo bomber fighter pilot Mr Robert Roy, III invites us into his Pembroke home to see memorabilia and hear about war-time experiences.

Listen as he describes learning how to fly the torpedo bombers with 2,000 lb torpedoes into Tokyo in 1945.

Roy left Harvard University freshman year to join the service, having been impressed by an active-duty pilot in full uniform visiting area high schools.
"Only an 18-yr-old would think it fun to go to war," said Roy. "It was pretty shrewd of them to send a guy in uniform around to impress us kids."

Roy's mother Lydia in Wollaston signed the enlistment papers in 1942, and off he went to Florida for flight training which began with Piper Cubs and progressed to torpedo bombers..

Create Your Own "Indie" Short

We at Pembroke Community Media will help you make an “Indie.” CLICK HERE or phone us at 781-910-8899.  There are no hidden fees.

The idea that an average person can engage in the act of movie making and journalism is nothing new, and in fact has a long history in the United States.  With today’s  technology, this movement has found new life.  More and more people are capturing news and creating custom videos distributed via mass media anywhere and everywhere.

Go now to Pembroke Community Media to see what Pembroke residents just like you have made.  Our current active volunteers come from all walks of life, and are aged from two to 91 years.  It's true.

In Wikipedia an independent film is described as “a professional film production resulting in a feature film  produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system. An independent film production can rival a mainstream film production if it has the necessary funding and distribution”.
Pembroke Community Media makes independent creation tools available to our fellow Pembroke resident(s), so that independent producer can be you!

Here are some more facts to consider.  The increasing popularity and feasibility of low-budget productions over the last 15 years has spurred an increase in the number of aspiring artists writing speculation or “spec” scripts then trying their hand at movie making.

Today,  the large volume of inexpensive, high end digital equipment available at the consumer level, allows independent movie makers freedom from major studios which previously cornered the market on required equipment and supplies.  Production tools can be found in most towns' public access media locations.

Thanks to decreasing technology costs, thousands of small production companies can obtain the resources they need to produce entertaining shows at a fraction of the cost of the big Hollywood studios.  Post production also has been simplified by software that can be used on home computers.

The indie scene's development in the 1990s and 2000s was stimulated by both development of affordable digital cameras rivaling 35 mm film quality, and easy-to-use computer editing software, the same that's available at Pembroke Community Media.

Editing software available at Pembroke Community Media is Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. These new technologies help create videos comparable to those with high budgets.

So,  try your hand at creating an Indie. Give us a call and we'll help.  781-910-8899

John Henry O'Keefe Gets "Best Show" Award

High School freshman John Henry O'Keefe received Pembroke Community Media's "Best Show of the Month" award for his video, "Pie Night with the Scouts," during an April 17, 2013 ceremony officiated by Ann Ryerson who has been involved in Pembroke media endeavors for over 28 years.

A video of the ceremony is playing HERE in the “Awards” category.

Ryerson presented the document, asked John how he became interested in video production, and said she is looking forward to seeing his future productions.
John answered that his mom showed him how he could get involved. After his first video, "Scouting for Food," was well received, John decided "to get into it," and make "Pie Night with the Scouts.”

He shot all his footage at St.Theclas Church with a professional Panasonic camera, and edited with Final Cut Pro software.  When asked how he chose the silent picture-style accompanying music, John answered that  “It just seemed to fit.”

Volunteer Janet Callaghan assisted with camera and tripod equipment at the church.

With close to 600 views, the comedic short is the most watched show from November 2012.

“Congratulations, John Henry, on this wonderful award,” his proud mom, Kim O'Keefe said after the presentation.  “You did a great job. Thank you.”
Cookies were served as John Henry discussed plans for his next production to be filmed at the Herring Run with his uncle Bobby. “Bobby's knowledgeable about the Herring Run,” Kim offered, “and he can be interviewed.”

“Pie Night with the Scouts” was shown at two separate go-and-see-it Tiger Cub Scouting events held at Pembroke Community Media Center this past year.  Thanks to this budding filmmaker, laughing Tigers munched on popcorn, drank water,  and were able to watch whipped cream pies plastered on adults' faces, and green-colored applesauce goop poured over the adults' heads.

John Henry hosted one of those movie-night events by serving snacks and cleaning up afterwards. Pembroke Community Middle School volunteer, Billy Bracken hosted the other.

You can watch “Pie Night with the Scouts” in the “More Fun Videos” section of www.pembrokecommunitymedia.com.

Media production runs in John Henry's family.

Uncle Kevin O'Keefe, producer of “The Home Show” that ran on Pembroke Public Access from 1988 to 1990,  jokingly said “I taught that little kid everything he knows. No, just kidding.  Really, I think he picked it up from watching me.  Mostly he learned how to aggravate his father from listening to me.

“Johnny's a natural,” Kevin continued.  “I don't know how he does it, but he just picks things up. He's a smart kid.  When he likes things he just grabs it and runs with it.”

Kevin graduated in 1981 from North East Broadcasting School at 282 Marlboro Street,  Boston, Massachusetts, with a degree in radio and television communications.  He  interned at a now-closed Boston Radio station before serving two terms on Pembroke's Cable Access Committee.

Pembroke Community Media is a Commonwealth of Massachusetts non-profit, IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that was formed by Pembroke residents in June 2012.  It is run by volunteers with help from local businesses and viewers like you.  There is no affiliation with Comcast or pactv.  Pembroke Community Media is in Pembroke.

I AM THANKFUL FOR LOVE, A WARM HOUSE, & COLORED MASHED POTATOES

For what are you thankful?  For good things?  For the absence of bad?

The First Church in Pembroke, Massachusetts held a Thanksgiving Eve service at which members expounded upon their personal thoughts of gratitude, while others played and sung lovely music.

"For the home where I live, thank you for meadows and beautiful flowers. Thank you for rainbows and soft April showers," a young girl reads from a book as her mother approvingly looks on.  So sweet.

Next there is a solo by Jim Tucker, the choir's only male member.  "Thank You Lord for Loving Us All," he sings, "for the gifts both great and small."

Three women each speak briefly about their personal reasons and items for which they feel grateful.

Did you know that some families add color their holiday dinner by dying the mashed potatoes?  It's true, and that's something for which thanks can be given.

A constant thread throughout this video is the lovely flute and guitar duet by Julie and Greg. The crisp and airy song is presented  in three sections: at the beginning, middle, and end.

You will enjoy this quick, heartfelt, and to-the-point affirmation of faith in God's gifts.  It's 17 1/2 minutes of pure joy.  CLICK HERE to see the video

Pembroke Community Media Center Thanks It's Sponsors

Thank You!   That's the 2-word message to our sponsors.

Pembroke Community Media Center's first 5 months were made possible by funding from Boat-Hut;  The 1st Church in Pembroke; NSK Inc.; 3-D Guitars; and the Briggette, Hatch, Lapham, McCue, Mattinson, O'Keefe, Smith,  Skolnick, Stowell, and Tanderes families.

Over 73 NEW shows were filmed, edited, and produced in those 150 days and are now airing on www.youpcmc.com.  Over 20 shows currently are in “post-production” and will be on the site in the coming days and weeks.

9 historic shows were resurrected, preserved, and have their own category, “Historic Pembroke.” Over 30 additional old Pembroke shows on VHS show tapes are being restored and processed now, with more coming.

The number of active volunteers has risen to well over 100, with an immeasurable number of donated, combined man hours.

Children from all 5 Pembroke schools are involved, with high school students alone to-date having earned scores of community service credits towards graduation.

New friendships have been forged and old friendships resurrected.

Pembroke Community Media Center has had an exciting an exhausting beginning, with the best yet to come.

Sponsorship opportunities come in all shapes and sizes, so contact us for a mutually beneficial arrangement.

YES, WE HAVE A VIDEO OF THAT!

Ever wonder how we decide what to film and what to edit?  Well, it's not us deciding.  It's YOU!

Edited videos of what YOU want to see.

It all starts when a volunteer calls or e-mails with his/her idea.  From there we find someone willing to do the filming, and another person who wants to edit.

It's like a match-making service for video production.

Sometimes more than one volunteer edits a piece, as is the case with The First Church in Pembroke Sunday Service. For that show, church member Heather Lapham edits with two friends, one of whom is Morman and the other Lutheran.

Scouting for Food at the Pembroke Food Pantry” was shot by 14-yr-old John O'Keefe who did all the filming and editing himself with some of our help.

Parent Deanna Hatch enjoys filming only, and has captured every Girls' Field Hockey game played this 2012 season.  Other volunteers edited for her.

Kurt Binder, owner of the business boat-hut.com, used our Final Cut Pro software and computer to create a program from footage shot by another volunteer, Janet, back in September.

Our own DJ Mattinson is a wiz at grabbing Titans football game action for both home AND away games.

After a video is up and running on our web site, www.yourpcmc.com, a promotional article is written and distributed letting everyone in Pembroke know that your show is ready to watch.   Good job.

There are so many ways to make it happen.  You can borrow a volunteer, borrow a volunteer and a camera, or borrow just the camera.  No kidding…

Everybody loves watching themselves, so contact us today.

RICK GIRAGOSIAN'S SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY

Welcome to the November 11th Sunday Service at The First Church in Pembroke.

During what purports to be a standard children's reading session of “On the Night You were Born,” a birthday party erupts complete with cake, lit candles, and an entire congregation belting out “Happy Birthday”  to accompanying organ music.

It all begins with Gail Horsefield sweetly explaining to children gathered at her feet that “stewardship” means “taking care of,” and today it's about “taking care of one person.  Is there anybody who's a good reader and can read who this cake is for?”

A young boy reads the words “Pastor Rick” on the cake, the congregation responds with a loud guffaw, and the party portion of this service has begun.   So fun.

Pastor Rick Giragosian's spontaneous laughter and smile lights the room, as do the five candles which each symbolize ten years in his life.   Since cake eating isn't an immediate option, Gail thoughtfully distributes candy. Yummy!

The “party” is at the 11 ½ -minute mark on the video. We know this, well because we've been rewinding and watching the birthday scene again and again.

BOAT-HUT.COM IS IN OUR TOWN

Entrepreneur and local welder Kurt Binder's latest invention helps winterize pontoon boats.  Made of pipes, brackets, and easily assembled parts, this hut will protect your recreational craft from heavy snow loads, ice, and harmful sun damage.

“You can get three feet of snow, and this thing isn't going anywhere,” Kurt boasts.  “I used this on my boat last year and had no problems for the first time in six years of owning this boat..

After seeing Kurt's structure two years ago, neighbors Sue and Rob asked where they could get one for themselves.  The wooden “junk pile” they had just wasn't doing the job.

This exchange became the impetus for the creation of boat-hut.com through which kits now can be purchased from Kurt's home-based company.  781-293-4588 is the # to call.

“I needed some media attention so people could know about these boat huts I'm making, so I volunteered at Pembroke Community Media Center and got it done,” Kurt added.

The promotional video for boat-hut.com can be seen by clicking  here or by going to the web site.

“The experience I had making this video with help from Pembroke Community Center has even made me stop smoking.  What do you think of that?”

JOHN HENRY O'KEEFE'S VIDEO-MAKING DEBUT

Pembroke student John Henry O'Keefe filmed the Saturday, November 10th, Scouting for Food event at the Community Center.  As food was dropped off and sorted by cub scouts, boy scouts, girl scouts and others; he was there capturing the action with a big, professional camera set on a tall tripod.

John's ability to zoom in and out animated this video even more.

Picking up a camera and using it are the first steps towards becoming proficient, and it's no surprise that John Henry seems to have a natural talent.  His uncle, Kevin O'Keefe, was instrumental in starting Pembroke's Public Cable Access station over 25 years ago with Campbell Cable.

In the video, John conducts two interviews, shows the food that was donated during this Pack 105 annual event, and lets us watch some of the goods sorting on the Community Center's big tables normally used for Saturday night bingo.

He earned community service hours towards the forty required for graduation from Pembroke High School by filming, editing, and creating this video for all to watch and enjoy.

Pembroke 300th Anniversary - Civil War Encampment

Step back in time to a Civil War campsite in Pembroke, Massachusetts.  We'll spend an hour and 14 minutes in a time gone by, experiencing a slice of 19th century military life.

Uniformed Union and Confederate Troops assemble on present-day Pembroke High School's lawn.

“We are from the first Massachusetts Calvary.” a mounted soldier offers.  “We're part of the army of the Potomac, Calvary division.”

“Hazzah!' is yelled as muskets fire.  “Take your men over there.  Right face!”

A Captain in the Union Army says that 'We've been on this field.  We knew there were some Confederates out there so there are a couple of my cavalry men checking out the woods area.  They seem to have come into a nest of Confederates.  I'm not sure how many, but hopefully they're getting a good look at them.”  Captain goes on to say that he and his men have been trying to reach the railroad just beyond this whole area where small groups of Confederates have been found.

Cannons are loaded and used beside white tents that these soldiers call home. “Fire!”  Puffs of white spread through the air.

“The tactics of the 1860s,” a soldier says, “were dictated based on everybody's fondness for studying classics......some would try to move their troops across in mass formations....The classic example of failure to take into consideration mass volume of accurate fire was in Gettysburg.  Just marching up against a heavily entrenched enemy...That was pretty bad.”

See period gun replicas handled, loaded, and fired.

Did you know that pistol design changed after 1840?
