Pembroke Community Media Center's first 5 months were made possible by funding from Boat-Hut;  The 1^st Church in Pembroke; NSK Inc.; 3-D Guitars; and the Briggette, Hatch, Lapham, McCue, Mattinson, O'Keefe, Smith,  Skolnick, Stowell, and Tanderes families.

Over 73 NEW shows were filmed, edited, and produced in those 150 days and are now airing on www.youpcmc.com.  Over 20 shows currently are in “post-production” and will be on the site in the coming days and weeks.

 

9 historic shows were resurrected, preserved, and have their own category, “Historic Pembroke.” Over 30 additional old Pembroke shows on VHS show tapes are being restored and processed now, with more coming.

The number of active volunteers has risen to well over 100, with an immeasurable number of donated, combined man hours.  

Children from all 5 Pembroke schools are involved, with high school students alone to-date having earned scores of community service credits towards graduation.

New friendships have been forged and old friendships resurrected.

Pembroke Community Media Center has had an exciting an exhausting beginning, with the best yet to come.

Tastes of 1712 ~ A Pembroke 300th Anniversary Event

Join us in the hall of The First Church in Pembroke for a 300th Anniversary culinary celebration of the church's official 1712 formation.

The menu was authenticated by Kathleen Wall, the Colonial Foodways Culinarian of Plimouth Plantation, and prepared by congregational members with guidance from 18th century cookbook recipes.  Pembroke Community Media Center’s newest volunteer Janet Callahan edited and produced the festivities so you can relive the event as if you were there, or participate now through the magic of video.

The menu included roasted turkey, roasted pork, baked beans, butternut squash, a vegetable medley of carrots-parsnips-turnips, corn bread, cranberry torte, pear torte, Indian pudding with sweet cream, bread and "biscuit."

Did you know that "New England Bread" was and still is made of 1/3rd rye, 1/3rd wheat, and 1/3rd cornmeal? It's called "Thirded Bread."

A plain cookie made famous by President John Quincy Adams whose wife, First Lady, Louisa Catherine Adams brought the recipe to the white House, is named "Shrewsbury Biscuit," after Shrewsbury, County of Shopshire.

When directions called for flour, the spelling was "flower."  Martha Washington's Book of Cookery has pastry instructions calling for "flower," butter, and water to be "rouled" out.

These and other old recipes were used in preparation of the Tastes of 1712 dinner, making this historic 300th celebration both a traditional meal and an educational feast.

You also hear Pastor Giragosian read from a 1962 issue of Silver Lake News that looked ahead to the 300^th Anniversary in 2012, helping Pembrokians imagine what Pembroke would be like in 50 years.

Pembroke High School Jr. Varsity Volleyball is Back!

The Pembroke Titans Girls' JV Volleyball team met the North Quincy Red Raiders in a best of 3 game set on Friday, October 19th, and Pembroke Community Media Center volunteers were there to film the action. 

Pembroke’s 14-girl JV Titans team doesn't disappoint. They have speed and fortitude.

In the first set against the Junior Varsity team from North Quincy, the competiveness between the girls keeps the scores close through the beginning and middle of the game.  For Pembroke, Rachel Fletcher, Erin Wyngren and Maddy Mazola posted quite a few digs against North Quincy with Jenny Murphy and Venessa Depetro assisting, but North Quincy out hit Pembroke in the last few minutes of the game with a 4 point spread.  

In the second game North Quincy came out strong, leading from end to end, winning with a 10 point lead making for a 2 game set.

IT'S VARSITY MIGHTY MITES FOOTBALL - October 14, 2012

~ Pembroke, MA - The Varsity Mighty Mites Pembroke Titans Football team hosts the Rockland Bulldogs on this intermittently rainy Sunday afternoon on the field behind Pembroke High School. When water starts falling, the children do a fair amount of squealing.


Both teams are accompanied by their respective cheer leading squads which shout encouragement all during the game, and put on a more than entertaining half time show. Fans of either team will enjoy the action showcased by Pembroke Community Media Center's newest volunteer who uses the camera for the first time as he films his nephew Dylan who plays for the Rockland Bulldogs.

Historic Series - First Church of Pembroke Hosts Church History Discussion

On Sunday, October 14, 2012, the First Church in Pembroke hosted a church history discussion led by noted historian, Dr. Peggy Bendroth, Executive Director of The Congregational Library on Beacon Street in Boston.  Formed in 1853 the Congregational Library now holds 225,000 items documenting the history of one of the nation’s oldest and most influential religious traditions.   The extensive array of contemporary and classic religious material includes resources on American religion and New England local and town histories.  Peggy has a B. A. from Cornell University and a Ph.D in history from the Johns Hopkins University.  She is the author of several books, including “Fundamentalists and the City:  Conflict and Division in Boston’s Churches, 1885 to 1950” (Oxford 2005).  The discussion was part of the Town's 300th anniversary celebration.

 

The question-and-answer session with Peggy gives insight into New England's early religious days and thoughts regarding state taxes paid for church endeavors, the famous “wheel of cheese,” the origins of the rift between Unitarians and Congregationalists, and the life of a young man who became the first person from Japan to earn a Western degree.

Pembroke Community Media Center's High School Music and Sports Production - Titans Football

It's football season, and Pembroke Community Media Center's High School Music and Sports Production Series invites you get with the program and into the game.   Titans football viewing is back thanks to our volunteers, some of whom are earning community service credit hours towards graduation by filming, editing, and producing shows you like to watch.

  

The Oliver Ames High School orange-clad Tigers football team from Easton hosted our own Pembroke Titans on Saturday October 6^th for an afternoon game in the sun.  With clearly discernible sportscasting and close-up shots, this game is an easy hour and six minutes of arm chair fun. It was the Titans' 4^th game of the season, and the third away .

Game 2 of the 2012 Titans season was at night on September 21^st in Stoughton against the Black Knights. Get close-up views of Pembroke cheerleaders, and enjoy the music of the Stoughton Marching Band.  The lights are bright, and the tackles are fierce in this cool evening clash.

Historic Series - Famed Pembroke Artist, Brooks Kelly Passes Away

Famed Pembroke artist and historian P. Brooks Kelly, Jr.,  77, passed away on October 5th after a long illness.  Calling hours are Thursday October 11th at the Sullivan Funeral Home at 551 Washington Street in Hanover, and a celebration of his life will be at 10 am Friday, October 12th at the First Church of Pembroke on Center Street.

Brooks Kelly was educated in Plymouth and Barnstable public schools. Following military service in Paris, he attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), Pittsburgh, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

A long time resident of Pembroke, MA, Kelly served as President of the first Pembroke Arts Festival and was an active member of the Cape Cod Art Association, the South Shore Art Center, the Duxbury Art Association, and the North River Arts Society. He was a member of the prestigious Copley Society, where he held the title of Copley Master.

Working in acrylic and collage, Kelly won numerous regional awards with a bold, colorful style that is often tinged with humor. He is represented in private and corporate collections nationwide.

Pembroke Community Media Center is saddened by the news of Mr. Kelly's passing, and offers two recent, upbeat videos we made with Brooks and his friend, Ed Quill this past April, 2012.

Historic Series - Canoeing Down the North River with Everett Reed

October 4, 2012, Pembroke, MA ~ Pembroke Community Media Center, Inc. brings you another historic jewel with host and Pembroke Town Father Everett Reed.

On a 55 degree, sunny October 10th day in 1998, our trip follows the North River current upstream from the Union Bridge, through Pembroke's Job's Landing, through the Brick Kiln Yard, and under the Washington Street Bridge. 

Somehow under the Washington Street Bridge the current turned the canoe around sending it under the bridge backwards. "Never go towards the ocean in a canoe," Mr Reed advises.

This upstream 2 hour 20 minute trip is condensed here to make you feel as if you too were in the canoe listening to oars cut through splashing water during a guided tour.

Near the end of the show Everett presents pictures of ships from years past.  The 170 ton Bedford was the first ship to take the American flag into a British foreign port after the Revolution.Interestingly enough, that was the first time the British saw an American flag, so they did not recognize it as coming from America.


In 1782 the Maria was built on the North River and remained sea-worthy for 95 years.

Historic Series - The Search for the 102 Year Old Pembroke Time Capsule

October 3, 2012, Pembroke, Massachusetts ~ Pembroke Community Media Center, Inc. brings yet another of Everett Reed’s gems “The Search for the Pembroke Time Capsule”. 

Pembroke Community Media Center follows a policy of archiving, which means that old and historic programming like this is kept and revered as important for preserving Pembroke’s oral and visual history. 

The time capsule was buried during the dedication of the Civil War Monument in 1889.  The whereabouts of the capsule was documented and in 1991, 102 years later after an intensive search, members of the Town Memorial Committee looked low and high for the time capsule.  This film is a visual documentary of that search and recovery.

Join Town Elder Everett Reed on this exciting twist-and-turn adventure as people from 1991 look for the historic time capsule.  See if you can recognize all the searchers from back then as you watch the good natured reactions those involved have in their almost comedic search.

Nantucket in the Winter Time

Sept. 27, 2012, Pembroke, MA ~ 

This episode of “Expressions in Painting with Paul Crimi” is dedicated to the artist's brother Vincent Crimi who in his 50’s was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.  Vincent just turned 70 and was on his deathbed.   

This show is a tribute to a much-loved family member who "is a great brother and will always be a great brother and will be missed a lot."
Paul starts with a reminder of the meditative quality and strength of birch trees and how reminiscent they are of people.  He continues the show with a photograph of “Nantucket in the Winter Time” that transforms into a beautiful watercolor painting.

Watch as a black canvas becomes aqua water, blue sky and sands of Nantucket.

Listen to the melodic words explain the intricacies of mixing colors and textures to create this beautiful painting.
