During what
purports to be a standard children's reading session of “On the Night You were
Born,” a birthday party erupts complete with cake, lit candles, and an entire
congregation belting out “Happy Birthday”
to accompanying organ music.
It all
begins with Gail Horsefield sweetly explaining to children gathered at her feet
that “stewardship” means “taking care of,” and today it's about “taking care of
one person. Is there anybody who's a
good reader and can read who this cake is for?”
A young boy
reads the words “Pastor Rick” on the cake, the congregation responds with
a loud guffaw, and the party portion of this service has begun. So fun.
Pastor Rick
Giragosian's spontaneous laughter and smile lights the room, as do the five
candles which each symbolize ten years in his life. Since cake eating isn't an immediate option,
Gail thoughtfully distributes candy. Yummy!
The “party”
is at the 11 ½ -minute mark on the video. We know this, well because we've been
rewinding and watching the birthday scene again and again.
